Eden Karoo young scientists display innovation at Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair

4 August 2026

The Eden Karoo’s brightest young scientists showcased their ingenuity, scientific curiosity and problem-solving skills at the Eskom Expo Regional Science Fair.

Hosted at Outeniqua High School in George, the event featured 74 projects presented by 113 learners from Grades 4 to 12 and Technical and Vocational Education and Training students.

Participants earned their place at the Regional Science Fair through a series of Eskom Expo activities held throughout the year, including workshops and District Expos. Their projects reflected a wide range of scientific interests and community-focused solutions across the 13 Eskom Expo competition categories.

Engineering and Social Sciences proved to be the most popular categories, attracting 22 entries each. They were followed by Computer Sciences and Software Development with eight entries, while Earth Sciences and Environmental Studies each received five entries.

Eskom Expo’s Western Cape Provincial Coordinator, Lyndon Manas, said beyond the awards and recognition, the regional science fair provided a dynamic platform for young scientists to spark curiosity, build meaningful friendships and collaborate with fellow learners, mentors and STEM professionals.

The quality of projects on display was reflected in the awards presented, with 12 Gold medals, eight Silver medals and 28 Bronze medals awarded to deserving candidates. Several outstanding learners also received prestigious Special Awards sponsored by Eskom.

Special Award winners:

Best Female: Teagan Bothma, York High School

Best Energy Project: Jula Meyer, King’s College Outeniquasbosch Wildlife Village

Best Innovation: Heinrich Conradie, Hoërskool Outeniqua

Best Development Project: Ferlin Storm, Hoërskool Môrester

Parents and teachers are encouraged to attend a Regional Science Fair in their area to experience firsthand the creativity and innovation of South Africa’s young scientists. By supporting these events, they can help inspire the next generation of researchers to participate in next year’s Eskom Expo for Young Scientists.
