Champions once more!

Team Western Cape has done it again, defending their title for a remarkable fourth consecutive year by emerging as champions of the 2026 Winter National School Sport Championships in KuGompo City, Eastern Cape.

From 11 to 13 July 2026, South Africa’s finest young athletes took to the courts and fields to showcase their talent and sportsmanship.

After a challenging opening day, Team Western Cape showed incredible resilience and teamwork, fighting back to secure three gold, three silver and one bronze medal, finishing ahead of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

In football, outstanding individual performances saw Lethuthando Mthembu named Player of the Tournament and Top Goalscorer in the U17 Girls division, while Mia Heneke was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament. Miché Bessick also earned Goalkeeper of the Tournament honours in the U15 Girls division. Congratulations to Coach Ilze Jones for guiding the Western Cape U17 Girls to glory.

The Western Cape’s rugby teams excelled, with both the Boys and Girls teams securing gold medals while the province’s volleyball teams earned silver medals.

This historic victory cements the Western Cape's dominance in school sport and secures the province's position as the overall 2026 SA School Sport Champions.
