BackOnTrack classes make the most of school holidays

The Western Cape Education Department's #BackOnTrack initiative has proven to be a resounding success, with nearly 22 000 matric learners attending extra classes during the winter school holidays. Across the province's eight education districts, learners converged on various venues to receive tutoring in a range of subjects, including Mathematics and Physical Science.

Western Cape Education Minister, David Maynier, visited Protea Heights Academy in Brackenfell, where he witnessed the impact of the #BackOnTrack programme. Learners who attended the classes reported that the extra lessons have made a significant difference in their understanding of key subjects, with content being covered in greater depth.

The #BackOnTrack classes not only provided learners with additional academic support but also offered a unique opportunity for learners from different schools to come together and learn in a new environment. According to the learners, this change of scenery helped them stay focused and motivated.

The #BackOnTrack programme won't be slowing down anytime soon. As learners head back to school for the third term, extra classes will continue over the coming weekends, with Grade 4 and 7 learners also set to benefit from selected weekend classes later in the term.

In addition to supporting learners, the WCED also held intensive #BackOnTrack Mathematics training for Grade 10 and 11 teachers during the holidays. A total of 95 teachers attended the training, which aims to enhance their teaching skills and prepare them for the term ahead.

A huge thank you to all the learners, teachers and tutors who participated in the #BackOnTrack programme. While they may have had to sacrifice part of their holidays, the rewards will be well worth it come exam time, and help to improve learning outcomes in the Western Cape!
