Arts meets ambition: KKNK Youth Arts Festival breaks new ground

21 April 2026

The Klein Karoo came alive with creativity this March when 430 learners and teachers from across the Western Cape gathered in Oudtshoorn for the fourth WCED Creative Arts Educational Youth Arts Festival, held in partnership with the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK).

Taking place from 29 March to 2 April 2026, during the KKNK’s landmark 30th edition, the festival gave Grade 9 and Grade 11 learners their first experience of a professional arts festival environment. Through hands on workshops in Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts, learners didn’t just watch performances — they created, performed and reflected.

A major highlight this year was the introduction of the Growth for Jobs Programme, which linked arts education with real world career opportunities, helping learners explore pathways in performance, technical production, design, arts management and more.

For the first time, the festival also welcomed Grade 3 learners from the Eden and Central Karoo districts, who enjoyed professional children’s theatre and arts workshops, many experiencing live performance for the very first time.

Now in its fourth year, the WCED’s collaboration with the KKNK continues to grow as a leading youth arts platform, inspiring creativity, career awareness and a lifelong love for the arts — and setting the stage for an even bigger future.
