Agape learners launch into literacy for National Book Week
17 September 2025
At Agape School for Cerebral Palsied Learners in Mitchell’s Plain, National Book Week was nothing short of stellar.
The Grade 1 learners, guided by their passionate teacher, Lizel Maasdorp, embarked on a creative journey that culminated in the creation of their very own book: a space-themed adventure where each child became a character among the stars.
The idea was born from daily classroom discussions about exciting places to visit. While the zoo and other familiar destinations sparked interest, it was the vast wonder of space that captured their imaginations. With each learner contributing to the storyline, the class co-authored a delightful tale of exploration, teamwork and cosmic curiosity.
Mrs Maasdorp printed a copy of the book and the learners now enjoy following along with the story on paper while watching a video version. “The learners are so impressed and excited,” she shared. “They’ve been reading their story over and over again. The reason why we started the initiative is to cultivate a love for books, stories and reading.”
This project is part of Agape School’s broader literacy focus, which shines especially bright during National Book Week. During the year, learners across all grades participate in engaging activities such as Spelling Bees, dressing up as their favourite book characters and older students reading aloud to younger ones—fostering a culture of storytelling and shared learning.
