Transformation of the Heritage Landscape: WC Consultative Meeting

2019
(Department of Cultural Affairs & Sport, Western Cape Government)

On 17 April 2015, the national Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) convened a National Consultative Meeting in Pretoria to discuss vandalism, defacement and destruction of memorials, public monuments and statues. Representatives of political parties, civil society organisations, university students and other interested and affected parties attended the meeting.

The National Consultative Meeting took several resolutions, one of which was to appoint a Task Team to assist DAC to implement the meeting resolutions. The Task Team has scheduled consultative meetings in all nine provinces to consult on the resolutions taken by the National consultative Meeting.

On 30 June 2015, Western Cape heritage stakeholders participated in a Consultative Meeting on the Transformation of the Heritage Landscape. Discussions revolved around issues such as the guidelines and policies for public monuments, memorials and statues, the standardisation and transformation of geographical names as well as museums, social inclusion and nation building.
