Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital: Immunology and Specialised Infectious Diseases Unit

Description:
This unit is responsible for the management of children with HIV infection; specialised infectious diseases, including drug resistant TB; complicated or unusual infections, especially in children with weakened immune systems; and the diagnosis and treatment of primary immune deficiencies.

During clinics, individual counselling and group counselling sessions are conducted by the clinic lay counsellors or clinic social worker.

Referrals should be discussed with the Immunology senior registrar in Infectious Diseases. Appointments should be made either with Prof Brian Eley or the senior registrar.

Immunology consultations or investigations:
The duty senior registrar (contact through telephone exchange on 021 658 5111) or Prof Brian Eley (bleep 4173) share clinical responsibilities for immunology.

Immune function tests are expensive. Therefore, requests for immunological investigations must be discussed with the duty senior registrar or Prof Eley first before testing is arranged.

Monthly intravenous immunoglobulin infusions:
Intravenous immunoglobulin infusions are administered in the Day Room, Ward E2, usually on Thursday mornings.
To make a booking contact the ward sister, on 021 658 5053 or 021 658 5153.

All children managed through the immunology service should be discussed with a senior registrar or immunology consultant to ensure continuity of care.

After-hours consultation: An infectious diseases on-call consultant can be contacted through the telephone exchange on 021 658 5111.
