Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme

Description:

The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme is a multi-year programme that was launched to promote teaching in public schools as the career of choice for able and committed South Africans. Bursaries are available to allow eligible students to complete a teaching qualification in an area of national priority. Recipients of a Funza Lushaka bursary are required to teach in a provincial education department for the same number of years that they received the bursary.

Who can apply?
  • Learners, currently in Grade 12;
  • Graduates who want to complete a teaching qualification (enrol for a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE));
  • A person who wants to make a career change and become a teacher;
  • An unemployed person who wants to become a teacher.

You can apply if:

  • You're a South African citizen.
  • You're 30 years or younger.
  • You don’t have a criminal record.

Funded programmes:

Undergraduate studies

  • 4-year Bachelor of Education degree (BEd), specialising in Foundation Phase (Grade R – 3), Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 – 6) and Senior and Further Education and Training Teaching (Grade 7-12).

Graduate studies

  • One-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) for graduates whose degrees reflect two priority subjects where one module/course was successfully completed or studied at a third-year level while the second priority subject was successfully completed or studied at a second-year level.

When do applications close:

The closing date for new applications is 28 February 2021. Re-applications for existing/returning bursary recipients close on 29 November 2020.
