Monwabisi Resort

Description:

Monwabisi is a coastal resort that mainly caters for  the residents of nearby Khayelitsha. Its name means ‘bringing joy’. During summer, it is often filled to capacity, while in winter, it is generally only used by anglers.

The resort is situated on an exposed stretch of coast, where limestone cliffs along the seafront provide protection from the wind. The many picnic and braai sites are set out on terraced lawns in the bowl behind the cliffs, while an enormous tidal pool lies in the lee of a headland jutting out into the sea. There are also paddling pools and a pavilion, with kiosks and ablution facilities.

Unfortunately, the beach is very dangerous for swimming, partly because a breakwater that was constructed during the 1990s – to solve the problem of powerful waves and backwash in the tidal pool – has affected the currents moving along that stretch of coast. The breakwater creates rock pools which are fun to explore.

There is an accommodation park next to the day resort with camping sites and chalets, as well as a freshwater swimming pool. Monwabisi Chalets and Camping is located along scenic Baden Powell Drive close to Khayelitsha, and is flanked by the Wolfgat Nature Reserve in the west and the Macassar Dunes area to the east. The resort offers magnificent views over the coastline and adjacent mountains.
