The Tourism Safety and Security Unit is reponsible for proactive awareness programmes and reactive response procedures to any incident or crisis that may impact negatively on the tourism industry. Functions include management of the Tourism Victim Support Programme, activation, notifications, response, monitoring, recording, finance and administration.

The Tourist Victim Support Programme (TVSP) can help tourists by providing:
  • Medical and emotional support, including facilitating medical treatment
  • Help with short-term, temporary accommodation.
  • Help with basic necessities where possible (or required).
  • Help with contacting family or friends.
  • Facilitate counselling.
  • Assisting with legal processes where possible including police involvement.
  • Help with short term transport arrangements.
  • Facilitate embassy involvement
  • Facilitate transport arrangements (airline, car hire tour operators etc.)
  • Help in getting replacement documents (e.g. passports, flight tickets).
  • Additional information or advice.

The TVSP does not duplicate existing emergency response services and cannot:

  • Offer financial assistance
  • Replace lost items
  • Provide medical attention
  • Compensate for loss
  • Offer legal advice
