The Department of Transport and Public Works has started an 18-month road construction project on the R102 at the Maalgate River Bridge between the Glentana Intersection and the George Airport. The contractor is Mamlambo Construction, and the project is expected to be complete in August 2022.

Traffic will be accommodated on the existing road or on temporary deviations. Stop/ go traffic controls will be necessary to enable half-width construction (the closure of one lane) to take place.

The safety and convenience of the travelling public are of utmost importance and every effort will be made to ensure that all temporary road signs, delineators, flag operators and speed controls are maintained and are effective and that courtesy is extended to the public at all times. Motorists are requested to drive carefully, be patient, and obey temporary road signs along this stretch of road.

“Road safety is one of the strategic focus areas of my term in office”, says Provincial Minister of Transport and Public Works Bonginkosi Madikizela. “I understand that roadworks are frustrating for motorists, but the end result will be a better and safer road for the benefit of all users. Well-maintained roads are important social goods that support the economic growth of the Western Cape through enabling the rapid and safe movement of people and goods. Infrastructure development will help us get out of the current economic crisis which has resulted in growing levels of unemployment and poverty. Good roads help our communities to connect, access opportunities, and gain dignity.”
