The launch of the Ashton Arch bridge is still tentatively scheduled for 14 August 2021, but there is a high probability that it will be postponed at short notice due to delays beyond our control. Interested parties are urged to plan accordingly.

The delays have been caused by unforeseen interruptions in the shipping of imported equipment needed for the launch. The equipment was originally scheduled to arrive in Cape Town harbour on 5 July 2021, however the shipping company re-routed the shipment to Durban due to rough seas. Due to the recent unrest in Durban, the attempts to offload the container failed and the shipping company decided to back-track to Cape Town.

On arrival, Transnet’s IT Systems were hacked, delaying the offloading again. The extent of the delay remains unresolved and uncertain. The launch date will be confirmed as soon as possible.
