On Tuesday 31 May 2022, the Department of Transport and Public Works Directorate: Road Safety Management marked Child Protection Week by launching a Junior Traffic Training Centre (JTTC) at the Grabouw Thusong Centre in partnership with Theewaterskloof Local Municipality Traffic. Grade R learners from Thembani and Agape Primary Schools were given a guided tour of the JTTC on the day.

Learning good road safety habits at an early age can last a lifetime. JTTCs are one of the Road Safety Management initiatives used to educate children about road safety. A JTTC is a simulated road environment where children can play and learn how to use the road safely and responsibly without being exposed to life-threatening traffic hazards.

Because Thusong centres are public places established to take essential government services and information closer to the public, this was a good place for the construction of the Western Cape’s newest JTTC.

“This week is a Child Protection Week and the JTTC launch highlighted the importance of children’s safety on the road. Road safety is one of the most important life lessons one can transfer to a child”, said Vuyiswa Faye, Principal Road Safety Officer, Overberg.
