De-registration of NGOs Could put Service Delivery in Crisis

5 February 2013

The recent de-registration of approximately 60 000 Non-Governmental, Non-Profit and Public Benefit Organisations by the South African Department of Social Development poses a serious risk to the provision of welfare services to the country’s most vulnerable citizens.

In the Western Cape, several thousand of the affected organisations provide welfare services such as child protection, early childhood development, and frail care for the elderly, many of these on behalf of the Western Cape Department of Social Development. If these organisations are not registered as NGOs, PBOs or NPOs, then they can no longer be funded by the state or private donors to provide services to the public. This would have disastrous consequences in vulnerable communities.

I have therefore instructed my Department’s Institutional Capacity Building office to commence the process of engaging with affected NGOs to assist them to re-register with the National Department of Social Development as soon as possible. Over the next two weeks our department will be in touch with the chairpersons/directors of these organisations to offer assistance.

Although we have compiled a list of affected organisations, any NGO, PBO or NPOs that have been de-registered and have not heard from the Department of Social Development within the next two weeks are requested to contact our department directly (via the nearest local or regional office) to seek assistance in this regard. They should also check their registration status online if they are unsure. We want to ensure that no one is overlooked in the process of re-registration.

We need our NGO partners in this province and I will do everything in my power to ensure that we continue making the lives of our vulnerable citizens, better together.
