Encouraging Active and Healthy Lifestyles in Nyanga

16 February 2015

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sports, in partnership with various local organisations, hosted a soccer and netball event on 14 February at the Nyanga Rugby Stadium.

The purpose of the event was to promote social cohesion, and to encourage youth to lead healthy and active lifestyles by taking part in sport. 550 youth from the metropolitan area attended the event to show off their soccer and netball skills. The youth were also treated to coaching clinics, in which they were given the chance to learn some last minute tips from their coaches.

“These events help us to bring children from different communities together.” said coach Mncedisi Phukwana of the Phuhla Organisation.  He added that this initiative helps keep some of the youth away from negative influences within their communities.

“Playing soccer keeps me away from the streets, and I am part of an active youth” said Shamiel Benjamin from Delft. “I also get to meet a lot of people, and make new friends.” he added.  Events such as these give the youth of the Western Cape the opportunity to lead active and responsible lifestyles.

DCAS offers communities opportunities for children to get involved in sport. Parents should encourage their children to participate. Let us build a safe and active province BETTER TOGETHER.
