World Food Day Addresses Right to Food

5 September 2007
As part of its World Food Day (WFD) celebrations, the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, through its Farmer Support and Development programme will deliver 1000 indigenous fowls to a total of 40 vulnerable households in Murraysburg, in the Central Karoo District Municipality.

The aim is to champion the "RIGHT TO FOOD" campaign, which is the international theme for the 2007 celebrations, which is indeed very relevant for communities such as Murraysburg where the unemployment rate is almost 90%. The theme for 2007 is particularly important for South Africa in view of Section 27 1 (b) of the Constitution which asserts the right to food as a fundamental human right.

The Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Cobus Dowry will be launching the project on the 12th October 2007 in the Murraysburg sports grounds. The beneficiaries of this project will already have undergone training before receiving the fowls.
