Western Cape Transport Officials Investigating Minibus Crash on Aberdeen Road in Eastern Cape

3 July 2012

A minibus involved in a crash in the early hours of Wednesday passed through the Western Cape's Average Speed Over Distance (ASOD) network on the R61 (Aberdeen Road) between Beaufort-West and the provincial boundary. The minibus crashed shortly after leaving the Western Cape. Seven people were killed and 12 injured. Officials at the scene report that the minibus was being operated as a minibus taxi.

The Western Cape Department of Transport and Public Works is independently investigating the crash as a result of the information gathered from the ASOD network and police reports from the scene. This information has been shared with the South African Police Service (SAPS), including that the vehicle was travelling at an average speed of 128 km/h while in the ASOD network.
