Western Cape sports funding allocations now close to R8.5 million

18 April 2019

Athletes and sportspeople on the West Coast are set to benefit, after the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) invested R845 000 into the promotion and development of sport on Wednesday.

The money was allocated to the region’s sports federations at a cheque handover ceremony in the Saldanha Bay Municipality town of Moorreesburg.

A wide variety of sports received funding at the event; including codes such as pool, darts, equestrian and klaberjass.

DCAS Minister, Anroux Marais, delivered the keynote speech at the Moorreesburg Town Hall and spoke about the impact the funds would have on the lives of young people in the region.

Dr Lyndon Bouah, Chief Director of Sport and Recreation at DCAS, encouraged the federations to ensure that they comply with all the requirements for receiving funding from DCAS.

The cheque handover is the culmination of a process during which DCAS considers sports federations for funding.

Wednesday night’s ceremony was the fourth for 2019 and saw the total amount of funding allocated to sports organisations around the province reach almost R8.5 million.

Over R1.8 million was allocated to sports federations in the Cape Winelands region on 4 April, while R900 000 was issued to federations in the Overberg on 9 April and R4.8 was allocated to federations in the Cape Metro.

The last two handovers, for sports federations in the Eden and Central Karoo District Municipalities will take place on 25 and 29 April respectively.

DCAS works to promote the development of sportsmen and sportswomen around the Western Cape BETTER TOGETHER.
