The Western Cape salutes its Sport Legends

17 December 2013

“You are our legends, have left a lasting legacy and are great leaders in sport.” These were the words of Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Ivan Meyer to the 37 senior sportsmen and sportswomen who were honoured at the 9th  Sport Legends Awards in Paarl on Friday, 13 December 2013.

Minister Meyer said these legends of fly fishing, lifesaving, boxing, athletics, rugby, netball, school sport and athletics have made a significant contribution to sport in the Western Cape and the lives of many people. “We also pay tribute to softball stalwart Noreen Wallace and other legends who passed away this year. Sport has the power to change the world, and you have changed it for the better. You gave hope to your community and served them with pride, thus promoting social inclusion and spreading cultural warmth.”

Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport Head Brent Walters added that it is a joy for the Department to honour these legends for touching lives, building and uniting communities, and contributing to youth development. “Many of you made time-consuming voluntary sacrifices and leave a lasting memory in our province.”

Daniel “Spider” Miller, who is one of the founder members of South African National Amateur Boxing Organisation (SANABO) and who gave boxing development his all, said it was an honour to receive a sport legend award.

Just like the late Nelson Mandela, our Sport Legends of 2013 understand that sport is a powerful platform on which to build character, community and social inclusion, better together.
