Western Cape Provincial Parliament Public Participation Conference

25 March 2009
The Western Cape Provincial Parliament (WCPP) will be hosting its Public Participation Strategy Conference at 9.00 am on Friday, the 27th of March 2009 at the Provincial Parliament: 7 Wale Street, Cape Town.

The Conference is the product of a lengthy process in the Provincial Parliament that saw the development of the WCPP's Public Participation Strategy. This process included the input of the five political parties represented in the WCPP.

The next stage in this process according to the Hon. Speaker, Shaun E. Byneveldt is "to involve key community stakeholders, ranging from Municipalities and District Councils, community based organisations, Churches, Mosques, civics, women's and disability rights organisations, trade unions to ordinary residents of the province. This will further enrich the strategy and help ensure that it is owned by the people of the province. It is one more step in terms of the work that the WCPP has done over the past five years to help realise the objective of a people's Parliament. It will also help ensure that it is the public that directs the future of the strategy and the work of the WCPP in this regard. The WCPP is thus acting as a facilitator of the process of bringing the Provincial Parliament closer to the people."

The WCPP has also enacted a petitions law recently which seeks to help enable the public to petition the Provincial Parliament with regards to matters concerning delivery and governance issues so that it may then engage the Provincial Government on this issues.

Members of the public and organisations can register their interest in this conference by contacting Ms. Shirley Lucas at 021 487 1698 or shlucas@wcpp.gov.za or Ms. Masintle Motsapi at 021 487 1672 or mmotsapi@wcpp.gov.za.
