Western Cape Paralympians Achievements Applauded By Minister Marais

The Western Cape Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anroux Marais congratulates team SA who participated in the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics 2015 World Championships held in Doha last week. Minister Marais especially applauds the Western Cape athletes on their outstanding international achievements as they won 15 of the 17 South African medals: 4 gold; 7 silver and 4 bronze.

Minister Marais also thanks and congratulates the Western Cape coaches: Dr Suzanne Ferreira, Karin Le Roux, Daniel Damon and Raymond Julius for their unwavering support and dedication to the team. Without them these excellent performances would not be possible.

Another outstanding international achievement is that of Ernst Van Dyk, from Ceres who won the Wheelchair Division of the New York City Marathon held on 1 November 2015. Ernst’s determination has already won him the Boston Marathon nine times and in 2006 the prestigious Laureus Award. Minister Marais congratulates the 42 year old on his brilliant 1st place finish at the 2015 New York City Marathon.

Minister Marais said, “Hailing from the Western Cape, these Paralympians have made the province proud and deserve the title of World Champions. They have displayed top level athletic excellence at international sporting events and undoubtedly serve as positive role models to not only the youth of the Western Cape but to South Africa as a whole. The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport is extremely proud of their outstanding achievements”.
