Update on Ashton/ Montagu roadworks project

25 February 2019

Contract C818 between the Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) and Basil Read to rehabilitate and upgrade sections of the R60 and R62 between Ashton and Montagu through Cogmanskloof was terminated in August 2018. Haw & Inglis was appointed as interim managing contractor to ensure that critical subcontractors could continue work on Ashton Bridge. Other emergency work was also completed during the interim period, and stop/ go traffic controls in Cogmanskloof were maintained by the interim contractor.

DTPW invited limited tenders for the completion of the Cogmanskloof project. Haw & Inglis submitted the winning tender and has been appointed under Contract C818.01 to complete the project.

Critical work on Ashton Bridge relating to the pre-stressing of the arch tie-beams and the new bridge deck must be completed before Haw & Inglis can officially start as the new main contractor. This work is expected to be complete early in April 2019. Contract C818.01 will commence on 1 April 2019, and the works under this new contract are expected to be complete in February 2021.

Taking the Easter weekend into account, construction work should be in full swing from 23 April 2019. Regular progress updates will be published on www.montagu.org.za.
