Unique Cultural Experience at Museum

25 September 2012

The Shipwreck Museum celebrated Museum Heritage Week by giving learners from two Bredasdorp schools  a real cultural experience. The week of 17 to 21 September 2012 was set aside as the Museum’s Heritage Week.

During the week, the museum covered various heritage themes to learners from De Heide Primary and Zoetendal Academy. These include the manufacturing of bread, butter, soap, as well as candle-making and harvesting.

Museum representative, ms Sophia Lewis said that the aim of the programme was to give learners a real cultural experience of how things were manufactured during the pre-industrial days. “We wanted to provide  learners  with a new perspective on heritage, and  also for them to be grateful for the things that  are usually taken for granted,,” said Lewis.

The Department of Cultural Affairs values heritage in the Western Cape and is confident that the learners have left the Museum with new perspectives.
