Tygerberg Hospital improvements make a difference

1 January 2021

The Department of Transport and Public Works has completed a R42m upgrade of the Tygerberg Hospital electrical substation and generator panel as part of the hospital's maintenance and remedial works programme.

The 11kV switchgear and other equipment was replaced, including the generator control and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system.

The new equipment is based on gas insulated switchgear, which offers a major improvement in safety, reliability, flexibility and a significant reduction in maintenance requirements.

The SCADA system will improve the ability of hospital maintenance staff to respond quickly to network faults and provide network status data. The new generator control system will provide a means to run and synchronise the existing generators under test conditions and in the event of a power failure.

The appointed contractor is Motheo Construction, a Level 1 black economic empowerment (BEE) contributor. Because of the highly technical nature of the project, there were no opportunities to employ unskilled labour. Trench excavations

and installation of equipment required specialists because of potential exposure to live cables and the risks of interruptions to essential services.
