Tygerberg Hospital hero amongst us – Anthony Francis

21 September 2020

This week’s nominated coronavirus hero amongst us at Tygerberg Hospital, Anthony Francis, provides an essential service to the public during these challenging times. The hero amongst us campaign seeks to highlight an official’s achievements, abilities or personal qualities during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the eyes of hospital staff, he or she can also be regarded as a role model or ideal.

Anthony has worked at the hospital for five years as a social worker. Like many employees at Tygerberg Hospital, COVID-19 has affected Anthony’s work which required adaptation. ‘COVID-19 has changed my work in various ways. Conducting assessments and interviews required a different approach in order to protect myself in the workplace and to follow measures such as social distancing, wearing of protective clothing and regular handwashing,’ explained Anthony.

What motivates Anthony to come to work every day is to make a difference. As one of many social workers at Tygerberg Hospital, Anthony, who resides in Belhar, is motivated to add value to the lives of patients and his colleagues.

In his view, the hospital has made it easier for him and his colleagues during the pandemic. ‘I appreciate that management has implemented risk assessments on a daily basis, while daily COVID-19 messages to staff remind us to keep safe and to adhere to the protocols,’ said Anthony.

Anthony would like to share the following messages of support: ‘Be kind to yourself and one another. Seek information only from trusted sources so that you can take practical steps to prepare your plans and protect yourself and loved ones. Remember to protect yourself and be supportive to others. Assisting others in their time of need can benefit both the person receiving support and the helper.’
