Two new junior traffic training centres for the Garden Route

10 March 2020

The Road Safety Management component of the Department of Transport and Public Works recently launched junior traffic training centres (JTTCs) at Formosa Primary School in Plettenberg Bay and Thembalethu Primary School in George.

JTTCs are small-scale simulated road environments at schools for children to learn how to use the road responsibly. Because these facilities are play environments, learners are not exposed to any real life-threatening traffic hazards.

Road markings are painted on cement or tarmac slabs and small-scale road signs are supplied to participating schools. At the centre, children will learn about the rules of the road, safety, and the functions of different road signs.

According to Lulamile Lakata, Assistant Director: Road Safety Management, “the two schools were given JTTCs because they had previously complained about a lack of road safety in their areas”.
