Two Free Music Concerts at Mamre Flower Show

14 September 2009
Mamre, normally a quiet West Coast village on the flower route to Darling, will experience a temporary change of character on the weekend of September 18 to 20 when it stages the annual Spring Festival and Wild Flower Show. Hundreds of species of local wild flowers will be exhibited.

The weekend also promises to be filled with music as two classical music concerts will be held in the beautiful Moravian Church on Die Werf.

Executive Mayor Dan Plato will officially open the eighth annual Mamre Flower Show at 11:00 on Friday, 18 September.

Concert 1: 12:00 on Saturday, 19 September:
An opera concert presented by Prof. Virginia Davids together with students from the Opera School of the University of Cape Town. It includes arias, duets and even the sextet from Lucia di Lammermoor. Admission is free, but a donation for the restoration of the antique church bell would be welcome.

Concert 2: 14:00 on Sunday, 20 September:
The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra consisting of four soloists and a 60 member choir of the New Apostolic Church from Atlantis will perform highlights from Händel's Messiah. The soloists are Zandile Gwebityala - soprano, Sunnyboy Dladla - tenor, Janelle Visagie - mezzo, and Conroy Scott - bass. Admission is free, but a donation for the restoration of the antique church bell would be welcome.

Janelle Visagie has just won the Johan Botha Scholarship to further her studies in Vienna, Austria. Sunnyboy Dladla performed with Renée Fleming, the visiting American diva from the Metropolitan Opera in New York in a concert in Cape Town two weeks ago.

Concert 1 is sponsored by the City of Cape Town and Concert 2 is jointly sponsored by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and the City of Cape Town.
