Two female provincial traffic officers shot in Harare, Khayelitsha

5 July 2016

Statement by Donald Grant, Minister of Transport and Public Works

In a tragic turn of events this morning at 11:30, two female Provincial Traffic Services officers were shot and wounded by two suspects during a patrol in Harare, Khayelitsha. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel attended to the injured officers on the scene and both have been admitted to the nearest hospital.

It is believed that while the officers were patrolling the area, people travelling in a Toyota Avanza started shooting at them. One of the officers was shot in the arm, and the other in the stomach.

We condemn this incident in the strongest possible terms. We call on members of the public to come forward with information that may assist the police to identify and arrest the perpetrators. It is unacceptable that hardworking officials should be targeted in this manner as they execute their duties.

Our thoughts are with the officials, their colleagues and their family members during this time. The rest of our traffic police will be on high alert and on the lookout for potential danger, taking care on our roads, and operating in pairs.

The Department of Transport and Public Works will provide all the necessary support, and wishes the officials a speedy recovery. We remain committed to providing effective traffic law enforcement and management at all times with dedicated and well-trained officers.
