Twelve Killed on Western Cape Roads This Weekend

From 21 to 23 August 2015, Provincial Traffic Services stopped a total of 3 039 vehicles in 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape. Twelve road users, including nine pedestrians, died on the province’s roads this weekend.

A total of 1 967 drivers were screened for being under the influence of alcohol and 18 arrests were made.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Mossel Bay. At 1.15 mg/1 000 ml, this is four times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 1 747 vehicles were screened for speeding and 217 speeding offences were recorded. A total of 230 fines in the amount of R299 300 were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver fitness to vehicle fitness.

Highest Speeds Recorded:

  • 172 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
  • 144 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N2 in the Swellendam service area.

Two Other Arrests:

  • One false documentation arrest in Brackenfell.
  • One false documentation arrest in Worcester.

  • Stellenbosch – 1 cyclist

Greater Cape Metropole:

  • Cape Town CBD – 1 pedestrian
  • Heathfield – 1 pedestrian
  • Philippi – 1 driver
  • Bellville – 1 driver and 1 pedestrian

West Coast

  • Malmesbury – 1 pedestrian 

Greater Cape Metropole:

  • Nyanga – 1 pedestrian

Eden / Central Karoo:

  • Kwa-Mandlenkosi, Beaufort West – 1 pedestrian

Winelands/Overberg:

  • Agter Paarl – 1 pedestrian
