Tragic Bus Crash on the N1 Claims Four Lives

Statement by Donald Grant, Minister of Transport and Public Works                     

Early this morning (19 March 2015), at around 2:30, a bus travelling along the N1 collided head on with a truck travelling in the opposite direction. The horrific crash claimed the lives of four people and left 32 passengers injured. The passengers were transported to nearby health facilities for medical attention.

The bus, belonging to Eldo Coaches, is said to have been travelling on the wrong side of the road when the crash occurred. The drivers of the bus and the truck have both sustained serious injuries and were also taken to hospital. Early indications suggest that fatigue may have played a role in this horrific crash.

The SAPS are investigating the crash, and Provincial Traffic Services will be assisting with the investigation. The N1 was reopened at 10:00 this morning (19 March 2015) after the crash had been cleared.

I should like to extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those that have lost their lives, and wish the injured a speedy recovery.

As we move towards the busy Easter period, where many will be embarking on long-distance travel on public transport, we will do all in our power to ensure safety on our roads, as well as to prevent the deadly effects of fatigue, alcohol, and excessive speed.
