Top Matriculants Receive Special Awards

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has awarded seven matriculants from disadvantaged backgrounds with special awards today (Monday 16 April 2007) for excelling in the 2006 Senior Certificate Examinations.

 

Four of the matriculants have received laptops donated by Mustek, while three have received bursaries of R5,000 each from Maskew Miller Longman.

 

The candidates who have received laptops are:

 

  • Nontsikelelo Nqwaba (cell: 083-479-3747), formerly of Thandokhulu High School, who achieved three A and three B passes in the 2006 matric exams
  • Akhona Lunika (cell: 083-965-7242), formerly of Zola Secondary School, who achieved five A's
  • Charna John (cell: 073-418-9638), formerly of the Cape Academy of Mathematics, Science and Technology, who achieved three A's and three B's
  • Nyameka Mangqobe (cell: 072-118-9793), formerly of the Centre of Science and Technology, who achieved four A's and one B.

 

The candidates who have received bursaries are:

 

  • Ronalda Benjamin (cell: 072-760-8344), formerly of Breërivier Secondary School, who achieved seven A's
  • Clinton Hendricks (cell: 076-565-8437), formerly of Mondale High School, who achieved eight A's
  • Mero-lee Cornelius (cell: 073-989-9440), also formerly of Mondale High School, who achieved five A's and one B.

 

During a ceremony attended by some of the learners, the sponsors, WCED officials and the parents of the learners, Education MEC Cameron Dugmore said the they have proved that they can achieve, despite their disadvantaged backgrounds, and provide "role models for us all".

"Their results also reflect the commitment of their teachers at every stage of their schooling. Behind every successful learner is a successful teacher. These learners and their teachers have demonstrated that you can succeed, regardless of your circumstances, if you work hard and believe in yourself".

"The success of these matriculants also reflects the support of their parents, who have encouraged their children to realise their potential".

"I want to thank Mustek and Maskew Miller Longman for their generous sponsorship of these awards. We greatly value our partners who are working with us to ensure quality education for all."
