Support Provided to Flooded Regions in the Western Cape

8 June 2011

Media Statement by Minister Anton Bredell

Today, two officials from the Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) went to the Eden region to offer support and assistance after heavy rainfall prevailed for a few days, causing damage to property and infrastructure.

The officials will be assisting the Eden district as needed and will be there to offer support to officials in the region. Two Joint Operations Centres (JOCs) have been established, one in Cape Winelands and one in the Eden district, in order to respond to any emergency situations that might arise. The PDMC has been monitoring the situations in both the Eden and Cape Winelands districts, and are ready to offer support as needed.

Minister Bredell emphasised the importance of partnerships during situations such as these. "My department is committed to creating sustainable partnerships and co-operation to ensure the safety of all the people of the province," he said. "It is crucial that we work together and support each other to prevent unnecessary loss of lives. Officials at the PDMC are available to provide assistance as needed."
