Sport and recreation opportunities for Kranshoek community

17 December 2013

The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) partnered with the Bitou Municipality to launch the Kranshoek Community Sport and Recreation Club on Saturday, 14 December 2013. The launch was preceded by a week of holiday programme activities as well as indigenous games for young and old at the Kranshoek Sport and Recreation Day.

DCAS handed over sport equipment to the newly established club on the day of the launch. The equipment was donated by the DCAS Recreation, School Sport, Club Development, Client Development and Major Events components.

Kranshoek is a Griqua settlement situated outside Plettenberg Bay. Young people from this community participated in the holiday programme from 9–14 December 2013. Here they were taught skills and had an opportunity to participate in a number of fun-filled sporting codes. It is expected that all sporting clubs in the community will become affiliated to the Kranshoek Community Sport and Recreation Club because all DCAS and municipal support will go directly to this structure. A club constitution was drafted and an interim steering committee appointed.

The Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport Dr Ivan Meyer said it is important for youth to have opportunities to play sport. “This community club will promote sport participation among youth. The town has a proud indigenous games history, and we also want to develop other codes such as cycling and chess here. The club will receive further support from DCAS and its partners.”

Bitou Municipality Mayor Mr Memory Booysen said the launch of the club began as an idea between Dr Meyer and Griqua Chief Allan Le Fleur, and now it has become a reality. “We want the community to take pride in this project for the benefit of our children.”
