SA Schools National Winter Games Championships 2016 a Glorious Success

22 July 2016

There was great enthusiasm among the hundreds of learners from provinces across South Africa at the National Winter Games Championships 2016 that took place from 10 to 14 July 2016 in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The event, in which Team Western Cape was supported by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), was organised by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the Department of Sport and Recreation (SRSA), and was described as a glorious success by both organising officials and participants.

The core of the event lies in a selection of teams from all over the country to represent their province at this interprovincial schools tournament restricted to winter sporting codes that included chess, football, hockey, jukskei, khokho, netball, rugby, tennis and volleyball. The schools that participated from the Western Cape made the province proud by placing second place in the final points ranking.

DCAS Deputy Director of School Sport, Claude Meyer, observed that participation at the South African National Schools Championships offers learners from the Western Cape an opportunity to compete against the other eight provinces at a national level. “Team Western Cape performed admirably at the Winter Games edition in Durban and proudly attained second place. We express our warmest congratulations on this achievement to the various teams from the Western Cape”, he said.

By supporting prestigious events such as these, DCAS creates opportunities for the youth, allowing them to excel in their love for sport, BETTER TOGETHER.
