Roadworks in George and Wilderness begin

22 September 2016

The Department of Transport and Public Works has started a project to reseal, rehabilitate and perform structural maintenance on 20 km of road in George and Wilderness. This R52 million project is expected to have been completed in mid-2017.

In George, work will be done from the intersection of the R404 and the R102 near George Airport to the intersection of the R102 and York Street. Work will also be done on a section of the Saasveld Road from Knysna Road (N12), also known as the Seven Passes Road, to Whites Road in Wilderness Heights.

In Wilderness, work will take place from the roundabout intersection of Waterside Road and George Road to the Saasveld Road. Hoogte Road between Sanctuary Lane and Whites Road will be closed for road rehabilitation and slip repairs between 30 September and 15 December 2016, and again between 9 January and 17 April 2017. During construction, only local residents will be permitted to access these roads.

The Department is committed to providing Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) work opportunities and to developing small businesses. A total of R3 million will be spent on targeted enterprises and 12 600 person-days of work will be created for people from the George local municipal area.

A public information session will take place at 10:00 on Friday, 30 September 2016 at the Eden District Municipality Roads Department in Mission Street, George. At this event, information will be provided on the work that will be done, its phasing, work and training opportunities for local labour, as well as traffic accommodation arrangements.
