Results of Safely Home Weekend Traffic Operations

21 August 2011

Media Statement by Dan Plato, Minister of Community Safety

Integrated operations by Provincial Traffic, Municipal Traffic and SAPS saw 3 738 vehicles stopped at roadblocks this weekend, with 1 055 drivers screened for driving under the influence of alcohol.

A total of 19 drivers were arrested for the offence, with the highest breath alcohol reading recorded in Caledon at 1.19 mg/1 000 ml.

A staggering 1 487 cases of speeding were recorded, with the highest speed on the N1 near Paarl recorded at 178 km/h in a 120 km/h zone.

Approximately 412 fines were issued for various traffic violations.

Four people were also apprehended for the possession of dagga in Vredenburg. A 46-year-old man lost his life in a collision on the N1 near Leeu Gamka between a Mercedes Sprinter and a Ford motor vehicle. Two other people were seriously injured and 13 others sustained light injuries.

It amazes me that even when visibility is poor and roads are wet there are still drivers who see fit to exceed the speed limit and even get behind the wheel drunk. We will continue to act to get these perpetrators off our roads.

It's time for people to realise that adhering to the rules of the road is about so much more than only being responsible citizens. It's about each and every road user getting safely home.
