Relocation of Worcester Forensic Pathology Laboratory (FPL)

1 December 2010

The Worcester Forensic Pathology Services (FPS) has relocated its service from 10 Stockestroom Street (Doves Undertakers Premises) to Worcester Hospital, corner of Fischer & Suggest Street, on 11 November 2010.

Theuns Botha, Western Cape Minister of Health, said: "This relocation is bringing our services closer to the people and will improve the client experience. The people of the Breederiver Valley have been waiting for a long time for an improved facility. I believe the upgraded accommodation will make a significant difference to better service delivery."

The new facility will provide for increased accommodation and upgraded equipment to ensure that the FPS carries out its mandate effectively and efficiently. The facility will have ample amenities for families and stakeholders, a large clinical area, as well as amenities for personnel. The facility's operating hours will be weekly from 07h30-16h00. The service is however available and accessible 24/7 as personnel provide this service through on-call and standby duties to ensure effective service rendering to the public. Worcester Forensic Pathology Service serves the population of areas including Brede Valley, Montagu, Ashton, Robertson, Villiersdorp, as well as a large section of the N1 highway stretching through De Doorns and Touwsriver. The facility will also serve as a response centre during major incidents with mass casualties. The facility further acts as a referral centre for the surrounding Forensic Facilities such as Breederiver, Wolsely and Swellendam.

The department would like to remind the public of the following should a family member passes away due to unnatural death:

  • Identification: A relative or friend must view the deceased to confirm his/her identity (only at the facility).
  • Documentation for identification: A green bar-coded ID / passport / birth certificate / Temporary Permit for asylum seekers of the deceased will enable a relative to access and identify the body.
  • Sudden and unexpected death: The relative should bring all medical documentation / information or Road to Health Chart (clinic card) regarding the deceased.
