Public Meeting to Launch Phase 2 of Salt River Market Revitalisation Project

14 February 2007
Residents and other interested parties have been invited to a public meeting to discuss phase 2 of the Salt River Market Revitalisation Project.

The precinct was identified as an area for strategic public investment and the creation of public spaces which are conducive to dignified and prosperous urban life.

In terms of the Salt River precinct, the Salt River Market is seen as a key site for public investment. As a result, the City has embarked on a project to revitalise the Salt River Market.

Phase 1 of this project is nearing completion and included the landscaping of the civic square and the refurbishment of the ablution facilities.

The project is now entering the next phase and the meeting will focus on introducing and obtaining endorsement of the proposed Spatial Development Framework and Design for phase 2. The sustainable management of the market in the future will also be discussed.

A key outcome of the meeting will be the establishment of a steering committee to monitor and advise on the roll-out of the next phase of the revitalisation project.

According to Liezel du Preez, a City Urban Designer involved in the project, phase one included a cosmetic upgrade of the area, whereas phase 2 would focus on things like landscaping the market entrance space, improving the pedestrian crossing and other factors.

Lorryn Mcvitty, a Spatial Planner from the City, says the Salt River Market was identified as it was seen as a valuable community space that was in need of upgrading. The project, she said, was part of a broader revitalisation plan for the Salt River/Woodstock area.

Details of the meeting are as follows:

Date: 19 February 2007
