Provincial Traffic Safety Campaign Yields More Arrests

On 1 and 2 August 2014, 24 alcohol blitz roadblocks were held across the Western Cape. A total of 2 837 vehicles were stopped as part of Provincial Traffic services safety campaign.

A total of 1 180 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 31 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Mossel Bay at 1.45 mg/1 000 ml, which was six times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.

A total of 12 060 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 1 158 speeding offences were recorded.

Two hundred and sixty four (264) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R311 600.00.

The highest speed that was recorded:

  • 190 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
  • 152 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N1 in the Worcester service area.
  • 94 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on the N1 in the Laingsburg service area.

Other Arrest: two

  • 1 x failure to comply with a lawful instruction of a traffic officer (Brackenfell).
  • 1 x hindering a traffic officer in the execution of duties (Mossel Bay).

This weekend 17 fatalities were reported:

  • 1 x pedestrian (Camps Bay).
  • 1 x pedestrian (Observatory).
  • 2 x pedestrians (Worcester).
  • 1 x pedestrian (Blackheath).
  • 1 x pedestrian (N2 before Spine Road).
  • 1 x passenger (Mossel Bay).
  • 1 x passenger (N2 Vangate Bridge).
  • 1 x passenger (Elsiesrivier).
  • 1 x passenger (Laingsburg).
  • 2 x passengers (Voortrekker Road/Maitland).
  • 1 x passenger (R304/Klipheuwel).
  • 1 x motor Cycle Rider (R304/Klipheuwel).
  • 1 x driver (N2 Vangate Bridge).
  • 1 x driver – (Mossel Bay).
  • 1 x driver – (George).
