Provincial Athletes Honoured for Their Achievements

30 October 2014

On Wednesday, 29 October 2014, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo, Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, hosted approximately 30 of the Western Cape’s most notable athletes at an event to honour their contribution to sport.

The invited athletes compete in a variety of sporting codes such as kickboxing, chess, judo, gymnastics and netball. All of these athletes have achieved well in their respective sporting codes in the past year.

Brent Walters, Head of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), welcomed the athletes. “You are here because you have worked hard and achieved well this year. We want to encourage you to continue to build on what you have already achieved.” he said.

Minister Mbombo also acknowledged the hours of training and hard work that the athletes put in and said: “You are the role-models for the next generation of sporting stars. There are so many social ills that are pitfalls to the younger people and they need to see that people from their own communities are succeeding.”

DCAS supports and acknowledges our provincial athletes who are reaching great heights. Athletes should continue their hard work and strive to do their best. Let us build a healthy and winning province BETTER TOGETHER.
