Progress on the resealing of R43 between Bot River and Sandbaai

16 February 2016

A Department of Transport and Public Works roadworks project on the R43 between Bot River and Sandbaai is progressing well. The contractor began work on the R37 million project in September 2015 and is scheduled to finish by mid-2016.

Bays have been constructed at Honingklip so that school buses can pull off the busy road when they stop for learners. Patch repairs have been done on all but 6 km of the affected stretch of road.

An asphalt overlay has been completed at the intersection of the R43 and the R44. Overlays will be done between Vermont Ave and the Hemel-en-Aarde (Sandbaai) intersection, as well as at six other intersections (the southern intersection of Karwyderskraal on the R43, Fisherhaven, Onrus Main Rd, Vermont Rd and two intersections at Hawston).

Concrete and bearing refurbishments have been completed on the Bot River, Afdaks River and Onrust River bridges. The expansion joints on the first two bridges have been replaced and the bridges resurfaced. There is a notable improvement in the ride quality of the Bot River Bridge. Similar refurbishment work will be done on the Onrust River Bridge soon.

Construction of the realignment of the Fisherhaven intersection and turning lanes has started. The side drains have been cleaned, and a 2.1 km section resealed.

About 50% of the fences along the route that were damaged by veld fires have been replaced.

The Department is aware of road user frustration with stop/ go closures, especially those close to Hermanus. Between February and April, there will be two 24-hour stop/ go closures between the N2 and Hermanus, and a stop/ go closure near Hermanus during the day. The construction and supervision team tries to minimise public inconvenience by having closures during only one of the three daily traffic peaks. However, long delays can be expected.

About R3 million has been spent so far on targeted enterprises, and R1.1 million on local labour from the Overstrand municipal area. The project is expected to create a total of 3 000 person-days of work by the time it is complete.
