Professor Wilfried Lemke pays visit to MOD Centre

4 October 2016

On Wednesday, 28 September 2016, the United Nations’ special advisor for Sport Development and Peace, Professor Wilfried Lemke, paid a visit to the Bellville South Primary School’s MOD Centre. There are currently 181 MOD Centres across the Western Cape for which the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) is responsible and that serve as a hub for sport, recreation, arts and cultural activities for learners in the various communities.

Prof Lemke’s visit caused great excitement at Bellville South Primary. He was very impressed by the activities as well as the structured manner in which the coaches at the school worked, and he expressed his interest in the programme.

DCAS Director of Sport Development, Paul Hendricks, said the fact that Prof Lemke was so taken with the MOD Programme speaks volumes about how the programme is in accordance with the values of Sport Development and Peace as espoused and promoted by the United Nations. “It excites yet humbles one to learn that what is being done in the province is truly living up to world standards,” he said.

DCAS provides after school activities through the MOD Centres. Communities should support the MOD Centres and help to showcase what is being done. Let us provide safe spaces for our youth to develop their talents BETTER TOGETHER.
