Pro20 Cricket Action in Townships

26 September 2012

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport inspires the youth through promoting the Pro20 cricket format in townships.

In partnership with the Western Province Cricket Association and other entities, the department will host the u/20 Township Amacala eGusha Pro20 Tournament on Saturday, 29 September 2012.

Twelve teams representing the communities of Du Noon, Gugulethu, Khayelitsha, Philippi, Nyanga, Mandalay, Samora Machel, Mfuleni, Wesbank, Willows, Lwandle and Langa will compete in the tournament. First-round matches will be played on the Khayelitsha, Gugulethu, Langa and Nyanga cricket fields, with the final being played in the Langa Stadium.

The department facilitates a fun environment for youths to learn and develop their cricketing and life skills. Ms Nonceba Mpashe of the Sport Promotion Directorate: Club Development says that the tournament provides the platform for youths to develop their cricket skills, and also pays tribute to Solomon Makhosana for his contribution to the development of cricket in the townships.

Ultimately, a Solomon Makhosana team will be selected from these teams. Hopefully, this team will soon be good enough to compete in the Western Province Premier League Tournament. The department is confident that the Pro20 version of the game will encourage mass participation in townships and bring communities together.
