Premier Helen Zille is currently en route to Knysna amid the devastating storm that has forced thousands to evacuate their homes.
The Premier will begin by visiting the Disaster Management Joint Operation Centre in George – York Road, where she will be given an update on the effects of the storm and subsequent efforts to assist those most affected. She will then proceed to Knysna to conduct an inspection of some of the affected areas.
She will be met by ministers Alan Winde, Donald Grant and Nomafrench Mbombo.
At this stage, humanitarian support is being co-ordinated for an estimated 8 000–10 000 residents of the greater Knysna area, after devastating fires last night.
Western Cape Disaster Management will release the details of humanitarian aid required, so that the public may assist.
Disaster Management will also continue to provide regular updates on the current situation in Knysna and surrounding areas. Members of the public are urged to verify information they receive on social media, and to be directed by trusted sources.
