Premier Helen Zille to Take Part in Mandela Day Cook-off for Charity

17 July 2014

On Friday, 18 July 2014 (International Mandela Day), Premier Helen Zille and Minister of Economic Opportunities, Alan Winde, will participate in the ‘Food Forward’ cook-off as part of their 67 minutes to honour and celebrate the life of Former President, Nelson Mandela.

The ‘Food Forward’ project is a strategic project under the 110% Green Initiative, and is aligned with the Western Cape Government’s Green Economy Strategy Framework. The project was inspired by the recent global partnership to develop a Global Food Loss and Waste Protocol, which was initiated at the 3rd Global Green Growth Forum (3GF) in 2013. The ultimate aim is to tie the work done in the Western Cape to the Global Strategic Framework for food losses and waste.

One of the main objectives of the project is to raise awareness about the importance of reducing food waste, especially given the need for food in some of our poorest areas. The food will then be donated to the Stellenbosch Night Shelter and Communities surrounding the Devon Valley Landfills in Stellenbosch. Reducing food losses is not only one of the ways to encounrage a greener economy, it is also a means to fight poverty and hunger in our communities.

There will be cook-off teams who will compete to cook the tastiest meal with the simplest and cost effective ingredients. MasterChef SA’s Pete Goffe-Wood and Africa Melane from 567 Cape Talk will also be taking part in the initiative. Premier Zille will participate in one of the cook-off teams.

There will be an opportunity for interviews and photographs.
