Porterville Primary Excited by Olympic Roadshow

Excitement and competitive spirit ran high during the Olympic Roadshow that was hosted by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) at Porterville Primary on 29 July 2016.

The learners were taught about the history and values of the Olympics, as well as what it takes to become an Olympian. A short clip of Chad le Clos winning a gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games got everybody standing up and cheering.

Lungile Tsolekile (from DCAS), who was a member of the South African hockey squad at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, told of the excitement you feel when representing your country at the Olympics. “The road is tough, but you become a leader and inspiration to others,” he said.

Spot prizes were given to learners who correctly answered general questions about the games, such as what the colours on the logo represent.

The flame was lit by torch-bearer Jean-Pierre Snell, the local under-13 long jump champion. The Olympic roadshow will be travelling across the Western Cape with the next stop being St Helena Bay.
