Olympic "Gees" at Farm Workers' Sports Day

25 June 2012

The Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport collaborated with the Langeberg Municipality to bring together hundreds of farm workers at the fifth Farm Workers' Sports Day in Robertson on Saturday, 23 July 2012.

The "gees" of the London Olympic Games was invoked at the Kallie De Wet Sports Grounds as hundreds of primary school learners walked in carrying an Olympic flag. Regional teams were chosen after trials last year in the Eden, Winelands, Overberg and West Coast districts. There was strong competition in the rugby, soccer, netball, dominoes and tug-of-war events in Robertson.

This tournament demonstrated that sport plays a key role in bringing people together. It forms an essential part of the department's efforts to support citizens of the Western Cape to become actively responsible for adopting healthy lifestyles. Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer, said that his department is committed to make sport and recreational facilities more accessible to all. He urged citizens take personal responsibility for a healthy lifestyle by making use of these sport and recreational opportunities.

Dr Meyer praised all of the farm workers for the central role they play in economic progress as well as ensuring greater food security for all. "Farm workers, just like the rest of us, need access to sport and recreational opportunities," he said.

The Farm Workers' Sports Day emphasised the department's determination to ensure that farm workers have the same access to organised sport and recreation as all other citizens.
