Official Opening of Gymnastic Academy in City's Philippi Indoor Centre

The South African Gymnastic Federation and the City of Cape Town will officially open a Gymnastic Academy in Philippi on 29 March 2007 at 19:00 at the Philippi Indoor Centre. Deputy Executive Mayor Charlotte Williams will represent the City at the event.

The programme will include displays of the various forms of gymnastics e.g. rhythmic gymnastics, general gymnastics and aerobic gymnastics

The South African Gymnastic Federation's High Performance objectives are to better South African results at international level and improve the representavity of our national teams. The Federation has identified a need for international level facilities, coaching and professional management and that these facilities need to be accessible to all communities.

The facility will be equipped with apparatus of an international standard supplied by the Federation. It will not only concentrate on gymnastics, but also accommodate community projects aimed at the Western Cape. It will be a centre for identifying talent.

Chief Executive Officer of the South African Gymnastic Federation [SAGF], Elizabeth Cameron Smith said: "The Federation thanks the City of Cape Town for its assistance in securing the venue and helping to fulfil the high performance objectives of the Federation".

Similar gymnastic facilities have been established in the North West Province and in the East of Kwazulu Natal. The SAGF plans to establish a further three academies.
