New Louwville High School progressing well

12 October 2016

The Department of Transport and Public Works (DTPW) is making good progress with the construction of the Louwville High School in Vredenburg. The new facility, which is expected to have been completed in December 2016, will provide top-quality accommodation for 1 380 learners currently housed in temporary classrooms on the site.

This R65 million project was commissioned by DTPW for the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). Most of the school buildings will comprise a framed concrete structure and a mixture of face brick and painted infill walls.

Teaching facilities will comprise the following:

  • 19 junior classrooms,
  • 19 senior classrooms,
  • five science laboratory rooms,
  • two specialist classrooms, and
  • a multi-purpose classroom.

The complex will also have:

  • a hall with toilet facilities,
  • an administrative building,
  • caretaker’s facilities, and
  • sports fields and other amenities.

Currently, the contractor is busy with interior work in classrooms, wall tiling and paving, and work on drop-off and parking facilities.

DTPW is committed to creating short-term local Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) employment and skills training opportunities. A total of 59 local people, including 44 general workers, are benefiting from the project.

Contract expenditure on targeted contractor businesses so far is R5.1 million, R2.5 million went to suppliers and manufacturers, and R3.7 million was spent on local labour.

The DTPW and WCED remain committed to delivering infrastructure in communities where it is needed most.
