New Community Day Centre for Malmesbury

14 June 2010

A brand new Community Day Centre offering extensive primary health care services to Malmesbury and its surrounding areas will soon be built in West Bank, Malmesbury.

This eight-hour facility with specialised nursing services and a full time doctor will cost approximately R33 million to build.

Mr Theuns Botha, the MEC for Health in the Western Cape said: "The building of the new centre is beneficial to the community as the project will provide job creation for people in Malmesbury and on completion, will offer a wider range of comprehensive health services."

The new facility's core package of primary health care services to be delivered includes health education, a baby clinic, family planning and antenatal care. Curative services will include wound care, treatment of infectious diseases (eg Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases) and the diagnosis and treatment of sick patients.

Furthermore, there will be outreach programmes, dental services, counselling, dieticians, rehabilitation services (physiotherapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy) and a large pharmacy.

Construction for Malmesbury Community Day Centre commenced on 1 April 2010 and is scheduled to be complete late next year. Malmesbury Satellite Clinic will close and its entire staff, including staff from the current West Bank Clinic, will be moved to the new facility.
